Abstract:
Pleurotus ostreatus have rich source of nutrient and are used in traditional medicine. They are reported to have several therapeutic properties. In the present study, the development of mycelium of Pleurotus ostreatus on potato dextrose agar (PDA) was performed and spawn was developed successfully and further the cultivation on treated straw substrate was performed producing enough produce. The growth of the mycelium was developed by utilising tissue culture technique. Sterile cap tissue of Pleurotus ostreatus was inoculated on PDA and kept at 26˚C. After 6 - 21 days after inoculation, mycelium growth was observed and in 7 to 15 days, the mycelium was sub-cultured on PDA again. And for spawn development, treated rice grain was inoculated with the mycelium. Then, the spawn was sown on the cut rice straw substrate and after few days later, the full-grown mushroom was matured and harvested. The procedure can be employed for the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus.
